Mr McDonald said he had received more than 20 emails since he won the seat, including from members of the public who wished him well on the campaign.
He added: “I was a Labour councillor last time and we had more or less the same number of councillors last time, but I can remember a few people making sure they voted for Mark McDonald or Mark Kelly.
